Forest School in Otters

“Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.” -Stephen Moss

Throughout Reception, the children participate in a weekly Forest School session. Initially, we spend a couple of weeks on the school site while we all become familiar with our safety rules before we then head down to the Forest School woods and immerse ourselves in the natural environment.

The children have the opportunity to explore and learn about their surroundings, develop their social skills through playing and working together, learn new skills (including tools, knots and cooking on the open fire) and use natural materials to build and create projects. This will support our pupils to take risks, make decisions and initiate their own learning.

"I enjoy finding out what our new theme will be."

"Cooking on the fire is my favourite thing to do at Forest School."

"I like feeling free."

Working as a team to build a natural shelter.                     Using natural resources to create a sculpture.

Each child learnt how to use a bow saw and palm drill and created a disc each.

Some children got very creative!                               We learnt to tie a Reef Knot.

And we even built a bridge to cross the river!
