Mathematics in Early Years
“Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people, and in the world around them. Development is not an automatic process, however. It depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.”
Development Matters 2012
The first few years of a child’s life are especially important for mathematics development. Research shows that early mathematical knowledge predicts later reading ability and general education and social progress. (Duncan et al, 2007, School Readiness and Later Achievement)
In the Early Years at Newick CE School, we are passionate about children being happy, confident, mathematicians, with a love for learning. Children will have the opportunity to learn through play. Learning will be fun, engaging and challenging.
We provide an engaging and stimulating environment both indoors and outdoors that builds on each individual child’s needs and interests. We understand and appreciate the importance of the outdoor environment for our children. We value the importance of our local area and go on regular welly walks and undertake weekly forest school sessions – exploring mathematical ideas through the natural environment.
We enhance our indoor and outdoor environment to suit the seasons, the needs and interests of the children and to promote our quality rich texts that explore mathematical ideas. Our adults provide high-quality interactions to develop and deepen their learning opportunities. Adults are role models for the children and their learning. Children learn through a balance of child-initiated and adult-directed activities.
We work in partnership with parents and carers and are committed to giving our children the best possible start to their school life, teaching them skills which ensure success in the future to build confident and enthusiastic mathematicians.
Our objective is to ensure that all children develop firm mathematical foundations in a way that is engaging, and appropriate for their age. We aim to help them develop mastery of all the six key areas of early mathematics learning, which will help them build strong foundations, ready to progress into confident, enthusiastic mathematicians, who can apply their maths learning to real life and have fun with maths!
At Newick, children will:
- Develop a strong grounding in number
- Count confidently
- Develop a deep understanding of the numbers to 10
- Develop positive attitudes and interests in mathematics
- Look for patterns and relationships
- Develop spatial reasoning
- Have a go!
