Newick Church of England Primary School

'Be courageous, be strong; Do everything in love.'

Church School

Our Christian vision underpins everything that we do at Newick:

‘Be courageous, be strong;

Do everything in love.’

1 Corinthians, 16.

Teaching our pupils the four WICK values enables them to carry the flame of God's love and shine bright in all they do.  These values are:

Wisdom, Independence, Creativity, Kindness

In the book of Corinthians, Paul wrote about the importance of love and strength; strength and courage to do the right thing, to be resilient, and to have faith. To show love towards your neighbour and to yourself.  We hope for every child on their journey through Newick school that they leave with confidence, authenticity to themselves and their faith, and able to show and receive love.   Similarly, in the book of John 10:10, Jesus tells us He came to give us life in all its fullness and all things are possible with God, and we believe that we help give children the best start in their education by offering life in all its fullness here at Newick.

Our four Christian values have specific biblical references and are intertwined into the rules & ethos here at Newick CE Primary School

Wisdom

Be wise - as Jesus taught us 'deeds prove wisdom.' (Matthew 11; 19).  Our children make wise choiuces through their actions and deeds, and in their learning.

Independence

'For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore' (Galatians 5;1).  Our children are taught to think and act independently, standing on their own two feet, showing courage and resilience.

Creativity

'...he created them.” (Genesis 1:27) Just as God created man in his image, and the world and everything in it, so do pupils at Newick get to explore creativity through creative thought and actions.

Kindness

'Be kind to one another.' (Ephesians 4:32) Through our vision 'Do everything in love' children are taught to speak, think and behave kindly towards one another and the wider world.

Spirituality

At Newick, all pupils are encouraged to think about our school Christian values of Wisdom, Independence, Creativity and Kindness.  These are at the heart of all we do, ensuring that as the pupils grow and eventually move on, they have a strong moral compass to guide them through their journey. Part of this is promoting the idea of and developing pupils’ Spirituality.

Spirituality is developed by exposing pupils to:

• Beliefs, religious or otherwise, which inform their perspective on life and their interest in and respect for different people’s feelings and values

• Sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them

• Use of imagination and creativity in their learning

• Willingness to reflect on their experiences

St Mary's Church, Newick

We are very proud of the strong links we have with St Mary's Church. Church services are held in the church four times per academic year, and we invite all of our families to attend. The children write prayers, read passages from the bible and sing hymns.

Reverend Mundy and the church parishioners support the school in other ways.  Reverend Paul delivers regular Collective Worships at Newick School.  The volunteers are currently embroidering our new faith tablecloth, in collaboration with our Faith Council. The church have supported Break Out Days and in the past the children have planted bulbs in the church garden, arranged flowers and even fixed bibles.

The children learn about the Christian foundations of our school through visits and in class.  Newick CE School was originally set up in 1874 as a school for boys, built on land donated to the church by widow Mrs Blauw.  Come and see the original plaque of memorial in the school, which was installed after WW1 to honour the local men and boys who died in the war.
