Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Children’s personal, social and emotional development (PSED) is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives. Strong, warm and supportive relationships with adults enable children to learn how to understand their own feelings and those of others. At Newick we support our children to manage emotions, develop a positive sense of self, set themselves simple goals, have confidence in their own abilities, to persist and wait for what they want and direct attention as necessary. At Newick our children learn how to make good friendships, co-operate and resolve conflicts peaceably. These attributes will provide a secure platform from which children can achieve at school and in later life.
Year 6 Buddies
Every Otter will be assigned a Year 6 buddy. This system works well as it means every new school starter has a Year 6 who will support them. This helps with transition and eases the children in to school in September. Buddy systems operate all year round - the Year 6s and Otters share lunch times, play and learning throughout planned opportunities. This helps with Year 6s as they learn about responsibility, and it also helps the Otters as they have an advocate.
